The unlisted commercial premises at 152 Trongate, formerly a leather goods shop, will be knocked down to make way for the Candleriggs Quarter scheme which includes hotel, residential and office uses.

Planning officers agreed with an assessment submitted by consultants Zander Planning which stated that it was widely accepted that the building had a negative impact on the character and appearance of the Central Conservation Area.

The facade of the adjoining B-listed building is to be kept as part of the development.

A report submitted on behalf of developer Candleriggs Development 2 Ltd stated: “The proposed demolition is directly associated with an application for planning permission for the site,”

“A building to the west and the former public houses to the north have previously been granted conservation area consent for demolition as part of the wider Candleriggs redevelopment.”

“The proposed ‘Candleriggs’ development, which is bounded by Candleriggs, Trongate, Hutcheson Street and Wilson Street, will comprise a mix of private rented sector and private housing for sale, hotels, offices and retail/restaurant/commercial space at ground floor level,” the report added.

The approval comes after permission was also granted for the demolition of the former Royal Bank of Scotland building nearby.

Caledon Property Group lodged plans to bring down the property and ground floor shops as well as the Oriental Bar on Hutcheson Street.

The developer plans to build a 157-bed hotel, pub and shops on the site.

Mosaic Architecture & Design’s project will also see a pub and retail element included.
