Under One Roof and Mill Architects launch new education project for solicitors
Under One Roof, the Scottish charity dedicated to providing free and impartial information on tenement maintenance, repair and retrofit, has partnered with Mill Architects to strengthen solicitors’ knowledge around issues raised by tenement flat owners related to common building repairs, maintenance and retrofit.
A free webinar will be held on Wednesday 11th December from 12-1pm, covering the basics of tenement law, flat owners’ rights and responsibilities, and the projected impact on flat owners of expected legislation on energy efficiency and making owners’ associations in tenement buildings mandatory.
Mike Heffron, CEO of Under One Roof, said: “It is crucial for solicitors to understand the practical effects of tenement repair legislation, given the changes that we are expecting from the government in the near future.
“With the Scottish Government expected to introduce new legislation related to energy efficiency targets, and mandatory owners’ associations, more flat owners will be looking for support from solicitors to address long-term repair and maintenance issues, and get clarity around retrofit work.
“The webinar is the first in what we hope are longer-term partnership working with solicitors across Scotland looking to provide the best information possible to tenement flat owners and housing professionals.”
Jo Parry-Geddes, director of Mill Architects, said: “As architects, we have first-hand experience of the difficulties that come with undertaking a common repair project especially in pre-war traditional tenements with multiple owners.
“As new legislation is brought in to make the process smoother and make these buildings more efficient, it is increasingly important for solicitors to strengthen their existing understanding of the common repairs process and the challenges ahead.”
