A public consultation is underway into proposals to transform Edinburgh’s Cameron Toll shopping centre with new homes, a hotel and a cinema.

A Proposal of Application Notice was submitted in November for the “proposed redevelopment of Cameron Toll, to include residential and hotel uses, along with improvements to public realm and pedestrian, cyclist routes within the site and associated landscaping”.

The hotel will aim to “create a vibrant mix of uses and help support a 24-hour economy”, with its location also “helping to redefine how Cameron Toll is perceived from its surroundings”.

The hotel element of the plan

The proposal for residential accommodation has been discussed and generally accepted as being appropriate through a number of pre-application meetings with the Edinburgh Planning department. In terms of its location and design, there has been general acceptance of a tenemental style scale and mass fronting Lady Road, with an increase in height addressing the arterial roundabout and Inch Park.

This strategy allows the building to modulate in height between sensitive streetscapes, regional infrastructure and historic parkland. The location of the residential component in the north of the site provides an opportunity to integrate with Inch Park.

Roof terracing has also been incorporated into the proposals

And finally, the existing, single-use retail centre will be transformed into a “new local neighbourhood centre which offers a more diverse mixture of leisure, local business outlets and community facilities”.

A public exhibition will run online until January 14 where a further public exhibition event will take place from February.
