Views sought on new Giffnock leisure centre plans
East Renfrewshire Council has opened a public consultation ahead of a planning application being made for the development of a new leisure centre in Giffnock.
About this development:
- Authority:East Renfrewshire
- Type:Leisure
- Applications:
- Team:Stallan-Brand (architect)
Planned works include the demolition of the existing leisure centre and theatre building at Eastwood Park to make way for the new leisure centre, theatre, library and cultural facilities with associated parking and landscaping works.
Details of the proposed development, identifying the vision for the site and how the emerging proposals are being developed, are showcased on the consultation website alongside a short survey which runs until June 4.
A video presentation by project architects Stallan Brand will launch on May 17, providing a detailed overview of the proposals, information on the new facilities, and an insight into the creation of the new building.
A live consultation session will also be held via the ‘live chat’ section of the website on May 24 (1-5pm) and May 25 (4-8pm) during which members of the project team will be available to answer any questions.
East Renfrewshire Council considered a report in 2017 advising on the current condition of Eastwood Park Leisure Centre, Eastwood Theatre and Carmichael Hall and outlining options for future leisure provision and the Eastwood Park campus.
Two years later it agreed to develop a new replacement Eastwood Leisure Centre and Theatre in Eastwood Park, ahead of Shawwood Park and Broomburn Park.
The proposal is to construct a new building within Eastwood Park which will accommodate a range of leisure and cultural facilities including the following:
- Theatre
- Library
- 50m Swimming Pool
- Training Pool
- Family Pool
- Sports hall with games courts
- Gym/fitness suites
- Gymnastics space
- Cafe
- Associated parking
- Civic realm and landscaping works
It is proposed to submit a planning application in mid-June. If planning permission is granted, it is anticipated that work on site would start in June 2022 with the proposed works likely to take approximately 24 months to complete. The existing leisure centre and theatre will remain open and in use until such times as the new facility is in place.
