Walker Group gets in the swing for cancer charity

The rain failed to dampen the spirits of players at a golf day for the John Hartson Foundation at Harburn Golf Club in West Calder, sponsored by housebuilder Walker Group.

Despite the heavens opening, the charity event was a big success raising £5,100 for the charity set up by the ex-Celtic striker after winning his battle with testicular cancer.

Nineteen teams of four took part in the event with the Real Walker Cup, donated by former Walker Group chairman Mike Walker, going to the B team from Seafield Sportsman’s Charity Group. In second place was the team from Springfield Homes, followed by team Brian from R&J Bertram.

The event was organised by Walker Group’s Jim Murphy, in his role as chairman of Seafield Sportsman’s Charity Group.

Jim, who is a site manager at the company’s Monarch’s Way development in West Calder, said: “Everyone got soaked on the final four holes but nobody minded as it was such a great day and I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who came along on the day, our sponsors Walker Group, Neil Rennie Decorators and Kaim Park Garage in Bathgate.

“The John Hartson Foundation does such a great job raising awareness of not just testicular cancer but all kinds of cancer and the money will make a big difference to their work.”

Former Celtic and Wales footballer John Hartson said: “We are delighted to accept yet another donation from Jim and everyone at Seafield. They have been tremendous backers of the Hartson Foundation over a period of time and we truly appreciate their efforts and hard work.

“As I have said many times, we try our best at the Hartson Foundation to do good work and put something back into various cancer charities, but we wouldn’t be able to do it without the support, goodwill and generosity of the public.”

The golf day is just the latest event Jim and his friends at Seafield have organised for the John Hartson Foundation – the group also climbed Ben Nevis in June and the latest donation takes the total raised by them for the charity to over £14,000 in the past year alone. The group also support a number of other charities including MND Scotland.

Jim said: “It gives us a real buzz to raise money to help other people, it’s really satisfying and I am lucky that I get so much support from my family and friends.”

Sandy Casey, director at Walker Group, added: “We were delighted to sponsor the golf day and we are very proud of Jim who devotes so much of his spare time to charity work, despite having an extremely busy schedule as one of our most respected and hardest working site managers.”
