Wellpark Link, the Glasgow City Council City Deal project funded by both the UK and Scottish Governments, will encourage more walking, wheeling and cycling in the area - complementing active travel improvements underway on Duke Street through the Avenues Plus programme, as well as local regeneration activity.

Sections of Melbourne Street, Wellpark Street, Barrack Street and Hunter Street are being resurfaced, with pedestrian crossing points also upgraded. Wellpark Street is also being widened on its south side, with new trees planted along the route to improve its amenity.

And on Bellgrove Street a new, step-free pedestrian crossing will improve access to the train station and the entrance to the Meat Market site opposite.

Commenting on the project, Cllr Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council and chair of Glasgow City Region Cabinet said: “I’m delighted that work has started to improve the walking, wheeling and cycling environment around the Meat Market area. These upgrades will make it easier and more appealing to travel actively, as well as improving connectivity with the city centre.

“This work, which will increase the attractiveness of local public space will complement ongoing regeneration in the Bellgrove area.”

Occupying a strategic position on one of the main routes connecting the east end with Glasgow city centre, regeneration of the former Meat Market site area is a key element of the £27 million City Deal Collegelands Calton Barras project.

Funded by the UK and Scottish Governments, the project aims to bring vacant and derelict land back into use, build new homes, create commercial and community space, enhance the public realm and improve connectivity.

Work to create Wellpark Link started on site in mid-January 2025 and is expected to be complete in the next few months.

Both the UK and Scottish Governments are providing the Glasgow City Region local authorities with £500m each in grant funding for the Glasgow City Region City Deal.
