White paper launched on effects of thermal loading in ground shoring

The construction industry is facing increasing challenges due to both seasonal and environmental factors, making it essential to take these into consideration when designing schemes as they give rise to thermal loading.

Altrad RMD Kwikform’s latest white paper offers vital insights and innovative solutions to address these concerns.

Temporary works specialist Altrad RMD Kwikform has launched a white paper aimed at educating the industry on the effects of thermal loading on basement propping systems used in excavations. The comprehensive document explores the criteria for thermal loading and its impact on ground shoring props, while also discussing the latest thermal loading mitigation technology.

Ajay Nagah, commercial manager at Altrad RMD Kwikform, said: “Underground construction projects have a critical role in creating modern infrastructure. Whether it’s creating basements, transport tunnels, or underground storage facilities, projects are often highly complex, bringing significant challenges and costs. As well as the usual excavation sequence and geotechnical factors that need to be taken into consideration during the design of a scheme, vital seasonal and environmental factors also need to be considered as they give rise to thermal loading.

“Thermal loading can have a significant impact on ground shoring equipment, and consulting engineers are now interpreting industry standards differently, meaning an increased contribution from solar gain, combined with seasonal and daily variations in temperature, all need to be considered when in the design phase of a project.

The white paper explains what thermal loading is and introduces the new patent protected Tubeshor Active Thermal Compensator (ATC), outlining the features and benefits of this innovative new Tubeshor accessory. Ajay also speculates on the future of ground shoring, discussing potential developments in the industry in the years to come.

He added: “Our new white paper has been written alongside our industry leading contractors and engineering consultants, providing insight into the effects of thermal loading and how new pioneering propping solutions can help to mitigate this. We believe this is the beginning of a new step change towards greater industry awareness of thermal load and the benefits of advanced hydraulic propping.”
