The new bridge is part of major engineering activity being delivered around the clock over the next four months to electrify the railway between East Kilbride and Glasgow.

The £140 million East Kilbride electrification project is at the centre of the Scottish Government’s ongoing strategy to decarbonise passenger services across Scotland’s Railway.

Residents and businesses in the area are being invited to a community drop-in event at Clarkston Bowling and Tennis Club, 27 Eastwoodmains Road, G76 7HD on Tuesday, 11 February 2025 from 2pm to 5pm. This provides an opportunity to meet the project team and ask questions about the work taking place.

The old footbridge was removed a week ago and the new structure is being installed in mid-March. This will involve a road closure to crane the new footbridge into position.

Work at the station also includes creating a new footpath that will provide improved access to Platform 2 from the main public car park (The Goods Yard car park).

Parapet walls are being raised in height at three bridges in the vicinity of the railway near Clarkston Toll, Stamperland Crescent and Strawhill Road to allow overhead electric line equipment to run underneath.

Karen Connor, Network Rail scheme project manager, said: “The footbridge and parapet works in and around Clarkston station allow the installation of the new overhead electrification equipment on this section of the route which will power cleaner and greener trains.

“We appreciate that over the next four months, we’re delivering a significant phase engineering across the entire route. Once this completes in May, we’ll then be in a position to ready the overhead lines for electrification.

“Our thanks go to members of the community for their continued patience and I would encourage people to come to our drop-in event on the 11th of February.”

A site compound has been set up in The Goods Yard car park and involves utilising 35 parking spaces for the duration of the works at Clarkston station.

The East Kilbride Enhancement project is due to be completed in December 2025.
