The proposals, designed by LMA Architects, comprise 11 one and two-bedroom flats to ambulant disabled standard and is being delivered for South Ayrshire Council by hub South West and Ashleigh Scotland Ltd.

The main construction works will start later this month and will be complete by the end of 2021.

Work will also recommence later this month on an affordable housing development on Fort Street/Citadel Place. This will take around 12 months to complete.

Initial work is also underway on the new Prestwick Educational Campus, which will be built on the site of the existing Glenburn Primary. Main works will start later next month with a target of Easter 2022 for completion.

Leader of South Ayrshire Council, Councillor Peter Henderson, said: “This is fantastic news for South Ayrshire as a range of projects get underway, providing affordable housing, an events space and further investment into our excellent education facilities.

“We’re committed to making South Ayrshire a better place to live, and I’m sure the public will be delighted to see we are moving forward with these plans.”

Meanwhile, South Ayrshire Council has welcomed last month’s award for its travellers’ site at Coalpots Road in Girvan.

The development of eight affordable chalet style bungalows clinched top spot at the Scottish Home Awards in the Affordable Housing Development of the Year (small, social rent) category.

Completed in August 2019 at a cost of £1.6 million, the housing which was part-funded by the council and Scottish Government, replaced the former Houdston travellers site in Girvan, which was damaged by flooding.

The layout reflects the uniqueness of the site, with a secure parking zone for caravans and a central communal area for the families.

Councillor Philip Saxton, housing and community wellbeing portfolio holder, said: “I am delighted with this award, it highlights the extraordinary effort that went into ensuring the housing met the needs of the travellers and the rest of the town.

“The end result is modern, energy efficient and accessible housing in close proximity to schools, public transport, health and other services.

“We will continue to work with our partners to develop affordable housing, ensuring people across South Ayrshire can grow well, live well and age well.”
