The world’s first recyclable turbine blade was handed a top award by Scotland’s renewable energy industry last week.

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy was announced as winner of the Technology & Business Innovation Award for its revolutionary RecyclableBlade which is giving recovered wind turbine blade material new life.

The inaugural Scottish Renewables’ Net-Zero Energy Transition Awards took place in Aberdeen. More than 270 people from across Scotland’s renewable energy supply chain attended the black-tie ceremony, which saw 13 winners receive trophies for their work delivering the energy transition.

Among the award winners were:

  • X-Academy, which took home the Green Energy Skills Award for its transformative career-enhancing programme that is helping support those seeking job opportunities which help the sector’s drive towards net-zero.
  • Aberdeen City Council, which scooped the Best Practice Award for its Climate Change Plan which has brought together more than 100 projects, from a housing retrofit demonstrator initiative deploying thermal imaging to new electric and hydrogen vehicles.
  • Sian Lloyd Rees from Aker Offshore Wind, who was announced as the Supply Chain Champion Award winner for her instrumental role in ensuring that the North Sea Transition Deal had a key commitment focused on the transformation of the oil and gas supply chain in Scotland and the UK.

The winners were selected by a panel of seven judges from a shortlist of 34.

Claire Mack, chief executive of Scottish Renewables, said: “I’m absolutely delighted that Scotland’s diverse supplier network has come together for this inaugural event to celebrate those working to deliver the energy transition. Reaching our carbon reduction and climate change targets is an enormous task and one that is going to need everyone and everything we’ve got.

“The incredible innovation, skills and engineering know-how across this evening’s shortlist is just a snippet of what we have here in Scotland and shows we are already on the right path to achieving this.

“The Net-Zero Energy Transition Awards are a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the passion, dedication and talent of the exceptional people and companies making up the energy transition supply chain. My congratulations go to all off the nominees, and of course winners.”

The 2022 Net-Zero Energy Transition Awards were headline-sponsored by TotalEnergies.

Jean-Luc Guiziou, UK country chair at TotalEnergies, added: “Scottish Renewables’ Net-Zero Energy Transition Awards was a celebration of the gains we’ve already made in the energy transition and great inspiration for the future. We were honoured to headline sponsor the inaugural event.

“The traditional oil and gas industry and the burgeoning renewable sector were each represented, demonstrating effectively how both are needed to successfully drive forward our net-zero goals. We’ve got a long journey ahead of us, but tonight’s awards showed that we have made a strong start.”
